I was just kind of curious about this... I'm installing a new Gentoo system today (I realized I couldn't live with Ubuntu ;-) and, having not done this in a while, I kept being confused by the fact that there was no eselect module to choose which compiler version to use. Until I remembered gcc-config. It seems like there are eselect modules for everything else - Java, Python, the kernel symlink, even ChucK - so why isn't there an eselect module that lets me set the compiler? Is it some technical reason, or just that nobody's bothered to make and test it yet? Or is there one that I just don't know about?
I didn't find the right solution from the Internet.
